I hate how games have to be "big" to "justify" releasing on a disc, as if being shipped to stores on a piece of round flat plastic is some kind of quantifier of quality.
Better because they actually get new arcade games, rather than throwback crap from the late 1980s or - at best - a handful of gunshooters from four years ago.

Everyone has their favourite and there's nothing wrong with that - in fact it's impossible NOT to have a favourite! - but the things you list as weaknesses for Nintendo and Microsoft are strengths for other gamers, and vice versa.

I don't think it's fair to say they haven't varied the game - Super Mario Bros. is drastically different to Mario 3, to Mario World, to Yoshi's Island in its looks and its mechanics.
The NSMB games added in all the moves from 3D Mario, touch screen controls, four player ... the new boost mode looks intriguing.

It's for the best really, people think they can make a cool level but in reality they can't. See any number of godawful Mario hacks out there.
And that's using Mario's engine as the template, I can only imagine how bad fan made LBP stages are.
Well the formula is '2D platform game', unless you want to change genres there's not a whole lot else you can do, other than what they have done.
That said if they swapped in a different character sprite and painted the backdrops a different colour all the jaded fans would suddenly be clapping their hands and squealing "Yay, new IP, so innovative!"
Fans of Platinum Games - ie. fans of videogames - are buying a Wii U anyway, so what's the problem? Dry up those tears and go pre-order your console. Do it fast, they're selling out extremely quickly.
Will they change their minds and come back if fans complain?

Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, NSMB U, Rayman Legends and Monster Hunter 3 ... from the first six months or so? Hell yeah. I think they've played a blinder in covering the various audiences.

I take your point, but I was talking about specifically the 2D lineage of each series. Actually the 2D bits in Generations were great - same for Mario Galaxy.
I prefer classic Sonic to classic Mario, love both though. Meanwhile the New Super Mario Bros. games are better than Sonic 4 - again, I love both though.

I'm skipping the demo as ever to just play the full game on release and looking forward to doing so, it feels like a lifetime since this was announced.. and yet there are still considerable gaps in what we know about it.

I think that if MS doesn't care about Mass Effect no longer being an exclusive it's because it has been for five years - resulting in a bizarre situation where PlayStation (and Wii U) gamers got a story-heavy, choices-led series missing the first instalment. It's good news all round that Mass Effect is now multiplatform in its entirety.
